Board of Directors

Meeting Minutes – March 14, 2006

In attendance: Vi Beaudreau, Hope Emery, Kate Emery, Kim Hoare, Polly Hincks, Steve Silk

Absent: Jennifer Boyd

Check in - We went around the room and introduced ourselves so that we could all learn a little more about Vi, and Kim, and so they could learn a little more about us. Kate also introduced (in absentia) Brenda Stiegman, who is our new Development Manager.

Website Access to Board Member information – Kate showed everyone how to access board information on our website (use the bottom menu on the home page).

Program Updates

MLK – While this was a successful show due to Victoria’s great management of the project, it took a lot of resources, that right now we feel needs to be dedicated to our core program – Care Circles. Since we will need to continue that focus this year, we will not be able to invest the funds and time required to do this again this year. Victoria will continue to manage this on her own, and we will support her in this effort if we can.

Nonviolence Training – Victoria has asked to have this separated from GHI as it was getting confusing for her with more projects coming from the University of RI where she will be paid by other sources.

Boys and Girls Club – Leadership Training is going well. They will be working on a video on the topic of drugs and violence, and are getting trained in production tonight. Polly suggested that we might get volunteers from the Asylum Hill Church.

Computer Contribution Program – Accepting ongoing donations, looking for donees. Polly may need 50 or so for Sierra Leone!

Care Circle Programs – This is our core project and so we really want to concentrate on this. We’ve not had much success with the general public invitation to come to a Care Circle and feel that it is just too vague, and vaguely weird. In an effort to get a better response, Kate explained 3 different ways that we’d like to get involvement and asked for feedback and ideas. Vi stressed the importance of thinking of ways to measure the success of various programs, and some discussion ensued as to how to best do so, and what some of the drawbacks can be. It was agreed that when ever we set up a program we should think about this.

Discussion/Brainstorming

The three different ideas for revamping our approach to Care Circles are:
Target Community Groups – By going to communities that already exist (groups such as Girl Scouts, assisted living communities, etc). We can approach program directors or community service directors and ask if we can help organize groups that want to work together to effect change Kim suggested that we talk to universities which should be a very fertile community.

Target Event Producers – By working through organizations that are already putting on events and suggesting that we can help them with a follow-up activity for those people who get charged up and want to do something.

Host Issue Discussion Groups – By hosting regular meetings here that focus on a topic of interest to one of us as leaders. Kate, for instance is interested in Corporate Responsibility. She would lead the group and get it off the ground with the idea that eventually it becomes independent of GHI and we spawn the next one. Vi suggested working on a Care Circle Toolkit, and he has volunteered to take a crack at this.

Polly is going to look into what other organizations are doing.

Home work – Kate handed out the newest general GHI brochure and asked for feedback.

Adjournment - There being no further business the meeting was adjourned at 8:35.
