About Us

Jennifer Jacobson - Director

Jennifer Jacobson is the founder and artistic director of WHEN CHILDREN SAVE THE DAY (WCSD) a not-for-profit organization that celebrates the power of children to make a difference in the world. WCSD’s interdisciplinary approach to storytelling and social action teaches literacy skills, builds self-confidence and empowers youth by encouraging them to be leaders in their classroom and stewards of the community.

She has been a professional storyteller since 1991 and is the 2004 recipient of the National Storytelling Network’s Brimstone Award for Applied Storytelling. Career highlights include her collaborative family storytelling program at Middle Collegiate Church in New York City, her trusteeship at the New York Storytelling Center and stewardship of its first Family Storytelling Festival in 2002. In 2005, Jennifer collaborated with The Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art and the Norman Rockwell Museum to create original programs for families.

Jennifer holds a BA from Northwestern University (1984) and her professional training includes graduate study at Bank Street College of Education with courses in Storytelling, Foundations of Education, and Developing Children’s Literacy through Folktale. The focus of this last course was on how folklore promotes literacy, motivates critical and creative thinking, and addresses ethical issues in ways that are compelling to young learners.

A graduate of Columbia University’s Institute for Non-Profit Management, Jennifer is also a published author of fiction, non-fiction and poetry. She served on the staff of National Dance Institute in New York as well as at the Academy of Fine Arts in Hangzhou, China. In the 1990s Jennifer led the Stage Directors and Choreographers Foundation and managed several family and corporate foundations through which she has been involved with the arts, youth programming and social action across the country.

Jennifer lives in Northampton, MA with her husband, children’s book designer, Michael Nelson, her two children, and a menagerie of pets: winged, aquatic and otherwise.
